When they say that something is ‘new and improved’, how can it be improved if it’s new? What is it improving on?

Good question.

Now that leads to another question. Do they have a talking dog? If so, they're wasting their money making dog food because that dog could mint you a fortune in a Vegas show. Or, are they able to read a dog's minds. Also a tool that could be exploited to make much more money than making dog food.
